Forget Tennis - it's all about golf this July

OK, so the tennis players might be all over our screens at the moment, but Wimbledon isn’t the only tournament to get excited about this month...

Golf ball

We’re talking about The Open Championship, of course.

Played since 1860, this is golf’s oldest championship and whether you’re a long-term fan, or fairly new to golf then The Open is one you’re sure to be following and talking about this summer.

And forget strawberries and Pimms — there’s a ‘Jug of Claret’ up for grabs here — sorry make that ‘Claret Jug’.

And the Claret Jug, all jokes aside, is one of the most famous trophies in sport and one that many of the world’s finest golfers have dreamed and set about getting their hands on.

Champion Golfer of the year

The winner not only gets to lift the famous Claret Jug, but also the sought after title of: ‘Champion Golfer of the year’.

The Open from the very beginning has showcased many golfing icons from Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Gary Player to Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory Mcllroy.

The 145th Open is set at the Royal Troon Golf Club, Ayrshire, Scotland, this year and this is the ninth time it has returned to Royal Troon.

The course, set on the coastline of the West of Scotland, is renowned for it’s dramatic scenery and challenging characteristics including deep rough and strong winds, designed to put the most skillful golfers through their paces.

Challenging and unique, this oldest professional golf championship has produced and inspired many legendary golf champions.

It’ll no doubt inspire you.
